The Coast Colts were unlucky on Saturday losing to University by 7 points in a hard fought battle. Sitting on 3 wins for the year but within reach of the top 5 the boys were keen to turn their season around and worked hard throughout the week, setting themselves for a big effort.
Still missing Co-captain Kurt Winter and the silky Haydn Burke, the boys welcomed back their other skipper Henry Cunningham, the speedy Chris Carnemolla, Rosco, Riley, Sean Kennedy and the ever reliable Doddo. Some good inclusions and the heart and courage the boys displayed last week, we were very confident of a win. This was not to be.
From the first bounce the boys were switched on with our ruckman Caino winning every tap and dominating his counterpart while the boys in the middle, Garvs and Dyl were running rampant. But as the main part of our season has proved, we can win the ball well but fail to put the scores on the board. The back six were amazing all day repelling any forward thrusts the uni boys could throw at them. They withstood all pressure for 4 quarters only limiting Uni to 5 goals, an awesome effort and with Doddo and Henry back they seemed a lot more settled and confident.
Apart from a lapse late in the second quarter, where Uni scored 2 late goals the boys were on their game. Trailing by 5 points at the last break, the boys rallied hard to hit the front with 6 minutes left in the match, but as the score would suggest we just ran out of steam at the final hurdle. Tim Garvey was outstanding in the middle all day and was full of run until the final siren. Junior Bellombra, unlike his brother, ran all day too and constantly found himself on the right side of packs and in great position. Henry Cunningham, Doddo and Joshy Bakes were brilliant down back, while Tommy Treaneor was the rock of Gibraltar down at full back. Sammy Marson showed how important he is to our side when he is playing at full tilt and was the reason for the last quarter fight back, while Riles presented all day across half forward.
Overall, there were very few passengers and we were incredibly unlucky not to win but we certainly did have our chances. Wembley this week, and hopefully the boys can get together during the week, fire themselves up and take our frustrations out on our last placed rivals.
