Clubman of the century Gary 'Superfish' Clune added another amazing string to his fundraising bow with a remarkable swim at Challenge Stadium yesterday.
The Challenge pool has seen a number of amazing feats over the last 2 decades, with the honour board of achievements, world records and World Championship Gold Medals won at the pool showing such luminaries as A.Popov, H.Lewis, K.Perkins and E.Sullivan. Well G.Clune can now be added to this illustrious list.
Cluney has worked tirelessly over recent months to raise a substantial amount of money for the West Coast Cowan Football Club. He set himself the ambitious target of swimming continuously for an hour-not an easy feat given the state of his leg and size of his paunch. He traipsed around suburban Perth accosting his usual suspects of friends, foes and family for pledges per lap that he could swim in the allotted time. Well, his phenomenal effort has paid off.
Starting at 3pm on Sunday June 22, with a crowd of club members egging him on and fellow swim freak Lucas Meaney swimming by his side, Cluney completed 32 50m laps for a total distance swum of 1.6km. Yes, for some of that time he didn't appear to be moving forwards and he looked as though he might be drowning, but like always, his heart carried him through. There to greet him at the finish line with a well deserved bottle of champagne were Pauline and Steve Rowe, and an emotional Cluney had done it!
In achieving the total of 32 laps, Cluney has pledges for MORE THAN $5000, all of which will be used to support the football club!!
So now, to all who have made a pledge-do the right thing and cough up-Cluney has yet again put his heart and soul into helping th club, and we'll all better off because of it.
WELL DONE BIG FELLA!
