Tiger Cubs Show Their Spirit

For the third time this year, the West Coast Cowan Colts were able to belt out the club song on the back of a thrilling 4 point win against a spirited Whitfords team. The boys dug deep to claw back a 2 goal deficit at three quarter time to claim the points in a famous victory.

After a disappointing loss to Trinity Aquinas last week, the boys were issued a challenge to come our hard this week and make up for the lacklustre performance the week before. Captains Henry Cunningham and Kurt Winter lead from the front providing strong voice and leadership which both coaches believed went along way to giving us the win. Both were very calm under pressure and showed great composure throughout the match. The boys were pushed very hard at training on Tuesday, mainly focusing on tackling, which was our main worry after last week. To their credit the lads hit every opponent hard and made the tackles stick. Sam Marson and young gun Cam McKay were outstanding along with Henry when it came to the physical approach of our game.

Throughout the morning the boys showed they could play irresistible football, believing that they can match it with the best of the competition. The run through the middle of Aiden Jones, Riley Coffey and Dyl De Nardi was unstoppable and damaging as they roamed through the middle of the ground. The ruck work of Cain and Eric was enjoyable to watch, while the defence of Jerry, Heath, Kurt and new boy Ed was steady and determined, as they have been all year, while Sean Kennedy was outstanding at centre half back playing his best game of the year. The forward line is really starting to find their feet and put the scores on the board. Stef Del Pizzo will run all day helping the defence if necessary, while Ross Martin is starting to have a major impact on games now. He kicked 4 helpful and skilful goals. Pete “Stevie Milne” Saraceni played his best game of the year crumbing most balls that went to ground and kicking a match winning goal.

When the game was on the line, it was hard to go past a few boys that did everything they could to get the team over the line. 16 year old Cam McKay was brilliant getting his hands on crucial football and tackling everything in sight, while Marsy constantly put his head over the footy, while Riley and Jonesy continued to worry opponents with their run and carry through the middle. The only concern is the injury worry of Haydn Burke who has been brilliant for the first half of the season with a cork.

Both coaches were relieved with the victory as it gives the boys a chance to get their season back on track and hopefully get their first win on home soil this week against Wesley Curtin. Farmsy was rapt with win saying it was great to see the boys dig deep and when questions were asked of them they stepped up in the biggest possible way.
